The advent of the microcomputer and digital photography has led to the rise of digital prints over many years, and now photographic enlargements are exclusively digital. These prints are created from high-resolution graphic formats such as JPEG, TIFF, and RAW.
The types of printers used for photographic enlargements are now virtually all inkjet printers. Photographic enlargements made with a high-quality inkjet printer, archival quality inks and substrates are also referred to as giclees. This approach is used for archival-quality artwork, short print runs, and for the customization by the buyer (such as printed size.)
When printed on good quality heavyweight art paper, the photographic enlargement can stand up to archival standards of permanence comparable or better than other collectable artwork. Many examples of photographic enlargements can be seen by the public at airports (such as the Kansas City International Airport, Kansas City, MO), or at conventions and exhibitions. Or, photographic enlargements as fine art are everywhere: as statements in corporate boardrooms and as wall decor in many creative-oriented companies, such as ad agencies.
